“You don’t come into the world with a personality you create one.” — Pierre Cardin Or The Art of Versatility.

Disgraceful for many, innovative for Cardin. Criticized by many but comforted by his own vision.

The news came in the midst of the preparations for new year’s eve; the fashion designer Pierre Cardin, whose real name was Petro Constante Cardin, passed away at the age of 98. Forger of futuristic revolutionary ideas and true instigator of new codes in the fashion industry, Pierre Cardin influenced the new generation of French designers like S.P Jacquemus and millions of lovers of ever more impressive creations throughout time.

Last born in a family of 10 children, Pierre Cardin took his first steps in fashion at the age of 14. It is therefore with a certain experience that we find him in the Ateliers of Christian Dior a decade later.

We owe him many clothing successes that resulted from his futuristic vision of fashion, based on the use of unusual materials such as plexi, rhodoïd, neoprene and vinyl. With the same impetus, he took a gamble that defied the codes of French haute couture.

“Jackets with which you can unscrew a car bolt, but also go to the Windsor.”

In other words, haute couture being ready-to-wear.

Disgraceful for many, innovative for Cardin.

Criticized by many but comforted by his own vision.

“You don’t come into the world with a personality: you create one.”

Pierre Cardin innovated the Haute Couture industry, which is highly known as sacred because of the latent elitism of its clientele. An innovation that reinvented the prêt-à-porter industry, becoming accessible to all.

His personality is what makes the tribute to the couturier so special. Recognition must be given to his tenacity, but also to his overflowing creativity. It is through nearly 700 license agreements that we find the designer’s touch in various arts: tableware, water or even architecture.

98 years of an artistic versatility he gave to the world, 98 years having forged his personality that he then created for himself; something he actually invites us all to do.

My advice to remember: Impose yourself by your difference and always bet on your own abilities first.
